We support local sport and active recreation across Moira, Benalla, Mansfield, Strathbogie, Mitchell, Murrindindi, and Greater Shepparton by providing advice, training, and resources to empower volunteers, strengthen governance, and build capacity.

We also facilitate initiatives that create inclusive opportunities for people of all abilities to get involved and stay active.

Valley Sport’s story began in the early 1980s, during a period of significant reform in the way sport was planned, supported and delivered across Victoria.

In 1983, the Victorian Government released the landmark policy paper Sport in Victoria, which set out a long-term vision for the planning, development and funding of sport across the state. A key outcome of this policy was the recognition that regional communities required dedicated, locally driven support structures. From this, the concept of Regional Sports Assemblies was born.

The following year, in 1984, a regional sports council was established for the Goulburn region. This council brought together representatives nominated by sporting organisations, government and local councils, laying the foundations for a new approach – one centred on the self-management of sport, by sport, for sport.

On 18 June 1985, the Goulburn Region Sports Assembly was formally incorporated, marking an important milestone in the region’s sporting development. As the organisation evolved and its reach expanded, it adopted a new name on 2 August 1989, becoming the Goulburn Valley Sports Assembly.

Reflecting contemporary practice and a modern approach to supporting community sport, the organisation changed its business name to Valley Sport on 2 February 2000 – a name that continues to represent its work today.

Today, Valley Sport is a proud member of Regional Sport Victoria (RSV), the peak body supporting regional sport across the state. RSV provides advocacy, leadership and strategic support to nine Regional Sports Assemblies, connecting more than 8,500 clubs and working in partnership with 48 local government authorities. Through these partnerships, RSV supports sport and active recreation for more than 1.5 million Victorians, ensuring regional communities have access to training, resources and sustainable opportunities to thrive.

From its beginnings in policy reform to its role today as a trusted regional partner, Valley Sport remains committed to strengthening community sport and improving lives through physical activity – from the Mountains to the Murray.
