In a significant step towards strengthening disaster resilience in local sport, Valley Sport has delivered a targeted Disaster Recovery and Prevention Planning Workshop for community sporting clubs in Shepparton. Held in September 2025, the workshop empowered five local clubs – representing golf, tennis, netball, and running – to build customised disaster recovery plans designed to safeguard their people, facilities, and operations in times of crisis.
The initiative follows the devastating October 2022 floods that impacted much of regional Victoria, including Greater Shepparton. Recognising the vital role that sport plays in community wellbeing and social connection, Valley Sport has worked closely with clubs to ensure they are better prepared to withstand future emergencies.
“Community sport is more than just games and training—it’s a place of belonging, resilience, and recovery,” said Nate Dedman, Project Officer at Valley Sport. “Through this workshop, we’re equipping clubs with the tools they need to protect what matters most.”
Tailored Support, Practical Outcomes
The workshop offered one-on-one support to ten committee members from five clubs, each of whom plays a critical leadership role within their organisation. Clubs were guided through the process of developing a comprehensive Disaster Recovery Toolkit, including:
- Detailed asset management plans
- Risk assessments tailored to local threats like flood, fire, and storms
- Compiled critical club information such as insurance, contacts, and emergency procedures
- Formation of Disaster Recovery Sub-Committees within each club
- Clear action triggers and response steps for emergency situations
Looking Ahead
This workshop is part of a broader strategy by Valley Sport to embed disaster resilience and good governance across the region’s sporting community. Ongoing support will be provided to participating clubs to help them strengthen their plans, adapt to emerging challenges, and ensure continuity of operations during times of disruption.
“Our goal is to upskill and prepare clubs —so that sport in the Goulburn Valley region can continue to thrive, no matter what comes our way,” added Valley Sport Project Officer, Steph Gorrie, who helped facilitate the Governance component of this workshop.
Backed by Community and Government Support
The Shepparton Disaster Recovery Workshop was made possible through funding from the Australian and Victorian Governments in response to the 2022 flooding event. Valley Sport also acknowledges the support of Greater Shepparton City Council, La Trobe University, and the State Emergency Service (SES) for their contributions to the program.
With success in Shepparton paving the way, Valley Sport now plans to scale the initiative to both the Benalla and Mitchell shires over the next two months, supporting more clubs to become disaster-ready and future-focused.
