Strong partnerships between Valley Sport and Goulburn Valley disability service providers have once again ensured a strong turnout of over 80 participants to the spring edition of the Get Fit Get Active Spring Series.

Designed to provide social participation opportunities, the Get Fit Get Active series encourages regional residents with a disability to participate in a number of modified sports and activities. The activities are specifically delivered to promote inclusion and connection between clients of disability services providers throughout the region while also showcasing the benefits of All Abilities sport to local clubs and community members.

The 2018 Spring Series featured two jam packed events hosted by the Benalla Bowls Club and Murrindindi Little Athletics Club, and Valley Sport Project Officer Jarryd Cutler said that the events had been a success.

“Once again we’ve had a great Get Fit Get Active series, and the events just seem to be getting stronger. When the initiative was started a lot of the on the day delivery was left to our Valley Sport staff to run, but over time we have worked with some fantastic sporting clubs who have seen the benefits of using their knowledge to provide opportunities to our participants”.

“After every Get Fit Get Active series we see the participants leave with a smile on their face and that’s all we can hope for. The carers and volunteers in turn also have a blast on the day and this year was no different, so I would say the event was a huge success.”

With those in attendance often unable to participate in regular organised physical activity, Cutler said that it was vital to continue to provide active recreation and sporting opportunities to the whole community and planning for the 2019 Get Fit Get Active Series had already gotten underway.

“Planning has already commenced for next years series which just shows the passion that we all have for providing inclusive sporting environments and making sport accessible to everyone”.

“I would like to thank the Benalla Bowls Club, Murrindindi Little Athletics Club, Bowls Victoria and the Benalla Rural City Council for their support of our events. By having these clubs and organisations publicly support All Abilities sport we’re helping to further break down the barriers that exist for people with a disability who wish to be physically active through recreation or sporting activities”.
